Use of Esophageal Impedance beyond Diagnosis of GERD

چکیده
Combined multichannel intraesophageal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring is currently the the gold standard method to diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A standard MII-pH catheter has six pairs of impedance electrodes. Multiple impedance-measuring within the esophagus allows determination of direction of bolus movement within the esophagus. So that MII is used as a good esophageal functional test in the diagnosis of swallow, belching, aerophagia and regurgitation.

Achalasia Previously Diagnosed as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease by Relying on Esophageal Impedance-pH Monitoring: Use of High-Resolution Esophageal Manometry in Children
Gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) is the most common esophageal disorder in children. Achalasia occurs less commonly but has similar symptoms to GERD. A nine-year old boy presented with vomiting, heartburn, and nocturnal cough. The esophageal impedance-pH monitor revealed nonacidic GERD (all-refluxate clearance percent time of 20.9%). His symptoms persisted despite medical treatment for G...
متن کاملClinical characteristics in patients with non-cardiac chest pain could favor gastroesophageal reflux disease diagnosis
BACKGROUND In patients with non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is thought to be the commonest cause. Ambulatory pH monitoring and/or endoscopy are usually performed in order to confirm GERD diagnosis. At present, clinical diagnosis of reflux in patients with NCCP is uncertain. The aim of the study was to determine clinical characteristics that could identify GE...
متن کاملChronic Asthma and Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease: The Treatment Plans
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) regularly occurs when stomach acid moves up from the stomach into the esophagus. GERD might be associated with chronic asthma symptoms such as coughing and breathlessness. According to several studies on children and adults, GERD is proven to have a close relationship with asthma. Medication treatment via proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Omeprazole,...
متن کاملRadiofrequency Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation Elicited “Jackhammer Esophagus”: A New Complication Due to Vagal Nerve Stimulation?
Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) is a potentially curative method for treatment of highly symptomatic and drug-refractory atrial fibrillation (AF). However, this technique can provoke esophageal and nerve lesion, due to thermal injury. To our knowledge, there have been no reported cases of a newly described motor disorder, the Jackhammer esophagus (JE) after RFCA, independently of GERD. ...
متن کاملCurrent Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Nonerosive Reflux Disease
Nonerosive reflux disease (NERD) is a distinct pattern of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is defined as a subcategory of GERD characterized by troublesome reflux-related symptoms in the absence of esophageal mucosal erosions/breaks at conventional endoscopy. In clinical practice, patients with reflux symptoms and negative endoscopic findings are markedly heterogeneous. The potential ...
